Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

Not getting my checks

I was laid off from my job on Thursday and my direct deposit when in early that morning. Of course, it was pay for last weeks work. In a paper signed for me attending an Apprentice program, it states that if the program is not finished you will have to make arrangements to pay what the company put down back to them. Seems as though they gave me no choice. The debited the money I had not spent back out of my checking account and they are telling me that they will be keeping the check that I have coming to me next week. Can they do that? I thought once you were let go, that the company had to pay you your wages then.
