comission payouts

Can your employer refuse to pay comission, on a sale that was in a contracted agreement, if you leave before the contracted company makes first payment? yet within a short time pays as agreed.

Of course, the employer can refuse to pay such commissions under the circumstances described, but is the refusal legally supportable?
