Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia
My company offers bereavement pay/leave when you lose a loved one, including step parents. On the 15th of this month my stepmother (who lived about 4 hrs away) passed away and my company denied me the bereavement time. I was told "It does apply to step parents but since she didn't have an actual funeral service, I could not take the bereavement time." Can they do this since they do offer it and it does cover step parents? I've worked here for 16 years so I'm not still in a probation period or anything.

I couldn't offer an opinion on this issue without reviewing what
the company's employee handbook or other issuance may
have to say about it. (What you were supposedly told about
it may be irrelevant.)
