Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

credit report affect hiring?

I have collection agency on credit report which i am trying to remedy through insurance(part of hospital stay billed to wrong insurance.Other insurance covered most of stay.I moved, didn't get bill-should have checked sooner). Can background check be negatively affected by this? Am I better off paying it off myself to clear my credit so I can get work or shouldn't it matter? I apply to retail, banking, customer service jobs and have to go through UNICRU personality tests sometimes. Not sure if credit a factor, the tests,or me, lol. I was denied teller position and they couldn't tell me why. Not sure if this under the right topic, but here's hoping. Blessings.

Re: credit report affect hiring?

You are correct to focus on the mar on your credit report as a possible reason as to why some prospective employers may be denying you employment. The problem is that it's very difficult to determine how much effect it may be having on your employment prospects, as some employers will systematically check a job applicant's credit history and give it substantial weight in deciding whether or not to hire the person, whereas others may not even bother to check out an applicant's credit or, if they do, give it much less weight in the hiring decision.

Nevertheless, there is no doubt that in the times we currently live a person's credit report

is quite likely to be much more important than in times past in determining whether that particular person gets a particular job.
