Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

Defamation

My boss is abusive and indignat towards all employees. He speaks about people behind their back and has unreasonable expectations for some but allows others to do what they like. He bullies those whom he doesn't like. What can I do to protect myself. I do not have a contract and the company is a private company.
