Defamation of Character

Can an employer be charged with defamation of character for intentionally making false statements that cause a derogatory action to an employee such as a written reprimand?

Maybe, or maybe not, depending upon whether the requisite undelying conditions have been met to support the defamation charge, such as whether the allegation was published (communicated)in the manner required under the statute and whether it was done with the requisite malice and/or reckless disregard for the truth---among other things.

Defamation is a civil tort (wrong) which is not easy to prove and you should arrange to consult with counsel knowledgeable in the law of defamation in the locality where the action would be brought if you have further questions.
