I am a female working at a hardware store w lots of yrs of expierence, I asked to switch a schedule w/a male and was told no because their would not be a male sales person on the floor for those hrs is this legal?

Probably, depending upon the particular and relevant facts which might apply to this situation, such as whether the store might be located in an area alleged to be high in crime or whether other store employees have been victims of assault and/or robbery on the store premises, or, perhaps, other similar issues.
