Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

Employer changing wages unexpectedly

Can an employer sign an offer agreement including pay scale, then change their mind and go to a different scale and tell employees that if they don't sign the new offer they will be considered to be resigning? Also, can an employerhire someone, then if they quit after a few days refuse to pay them for hours they worked?

Re: Employer changing wages unexpectedly

If the "offer agreement" is a binding contract of employment, the answer is no. the employer may not deviate from the terms of the contract without violating it.(There is doubt, however,

as to whether what you have described is in fact a

binding contract of employment.)

As to your second question, all employees must by law be appropriately compensated for all hours

worked, whether or not they continue to be

employed by the particular employer with whom

the hours were earned.
