Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

Employer requests money from short drawer

At the resturant where I work each server has their own drawer, but the main register is where all the walk in and togo orders cashed out of. Tonight the main register came up $ 35.00 short, and he is requesting that 3 of us pay him for the shortage. There were 4 servers on today and one of the servers is the owners wife. The owners wife is not required to pay. Can they make us pay for the shortage in the main register where all of us cashed out togo customers?

Re: Employer requests money from short drawer

No, the owner of this restaurant cannot make any server make up for this alleged shortage at the main register, but if any server refuses, he or she could be fired and without recourse.
