Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

Can employer require employees to not discuss a breach of another employees conf

A friend of mine was fired after returning to work for a nervous breakdown. The company said it was because they were doing away with his position, but they hired a contracted employee in his place. Prior to his return to work his supervisor blurted out at work one day the nature of his illness and why he was off ill. His fellow employees were told that they could not go off the work site and talk about this with anyone or they would be fired. My friend had been with this company for many years and worked very hard, so this has been very difficult for him.
