Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

can employer require me to volunteer before hiring me?

I inteviewed yesteday for an ultrasound tech position. I'm new out of school. They want to hire me and gave me an application. However, they will not pay me until I can do a full scan on my own. In the meantime they will train me. They expect that it will take 2 weeks to 2 months for the training. I'm nervous about this and wonder about its legality. The job is in Virginia and I live in DC

If this proposed training involves more than two weeks of work without pay, you should be suspicious and probably turn it down.
