Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

Employer withdrawing Money from Employee Checks

I work at a fast food restaurant part time. Over the weekend, $500 was discovered to be missing from the register or safe. Our manager has decided to withdraw $45 from the paychecks of everyone who worked over the weekend to make up for the loss. Is this legal? If no, what kind of legal action can I take against this?

Re: Employer withdrawing Money from Employee Checks

No, it is not legal and the matter should be reported to the Wage and Hour Branch of the Labor and Employment Division of the Virginia Department Of Labor and Industry(VDLA) with a request that an investigation be initiated.

You can find the VDLA's link under the Virginia government website.
