Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia
extreme wage reduction
I work for a large retail company. In Feb. 2006 my husband was diagnosed with termenal cancer. My store Manager approved redused hours at my current pay. She has since left the company and i was informed by the new manager that i MUST work 40 hours a week or they will termanate my heath benifits. My job title was changed and wages decreced almost $6.00 an hour. I am the only one working, little as it was. I don't qualify now for FMLA and cant afford to tale personal leave. Can the company do this and what options are avalibel to me?

Unless you have an employment contract or union collective bargaining type of agreement protecting you against such actions by the employer, the answer, unfortunately, is yes, they can do what you've described.
