Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

Feeling trapped - what needs to be proved

My organization has had a couple suits brought against it for unfair/hostile work environment and general/sexual discrimination charges. I of course have never heard the outcome as it was, of course, hushed, so I can not attest to the validity of these.

I am feeling as though there are activities that go beyond proper conduct and I am not feeling very safe to address them. My understanding is that HR is in bed with executive management and is not a safe location to address issues. Recently our VP pulled in people of my level to discuss this poor behaviorbut again, I--name removed--not sure it has changed anything.I have an anxiety issue, and I have found a few employees that realize I have the problem and, in affect, play on it. I have been cussed at via email /Being gay has certainly played into it. I have discussed these problems with a couple of executives and was told that I have to fight my own battles. There is certainly more to be discussed and I am extremely confused if it is worth the time to do anything about it.. What needs to be proven in a case concerning employer misconduct/harassment etc. Is there something you would suggest reading? What times of items should I collect? Can I record?
