Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

fired for attendance

I was recently fired for violated the company attendance policy. The policy stated that after when you reached certains amount of points your would recieve progressive discipline. Certain numer of pointed would be issued for certain actions. For example if you alled out sick that would be worth one point.Anyways I did recieve verbal written and suspension being fired. But I was still charged four points for calling out sick causeing me to be over the 15 point level inturn causing me to me fired. My boss told be that just because I brought in a doctors note documenting my absents didnot make me unabsent. That I was still unavailable to work.

My question is can they really do this to me. I feel its not fair I was fired.

Re: fired for attendance

Yes,indeed they can(they do and have done so--many times). Welcome to the world of work in the Commonwealth of Virginia, where employees who have no contract or collective bargaining type agreement protection labor at the sufferance of their employer and may be fired at ant time with impunity for almost any reason that doesn't violate federal anti-discrimination laws.
