Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

can they do this?

I was fired from my job because I have pain in my left wrist. I had a doctors note putting me on light duty for 2 weeks. I was fired because there was nothing I could do for 2 weeks that was light work. Can I be fired from my job just because I was hurt and under a doctors care for 2 weeks? I do not know if it was a work related injury. My doctor suspects that it may be carpaltunel.

Re: can they do this?

Yes, in the Commonwealth of Virginia, an employment at will jurisdiction, employees who do not have the protection of a contract or collective bargaining agreement or that of some other federally mandated leave program such as FMLA(Family & Medical leave Act)can, basically, be fired at any time by their employers for any reason which doesn't involve federal antidiscrimination laws(age, race. sex. ethnic or national origin, religious beliefs, etc.).
