Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

Fired for being sick.

Recently, I was fired for being sick one day. I had a stomach virus and called at 5:30 AM to alert my office (immediate supervisor and my project team) that I was to sick to come in. I called at 10 AM to check in and called my client to let them know that I was ill and would be missing our construction meeting. I did offer to call into the meeting but they said that wouldn't be necessary and that they would call in the event something came up. the owner of the company said I was a poor manager for not alerting him personally. This on the heals of being forced to work 301 hours in September. I think this is wrong. Is there any recourse?

Re: Fired for being sick.

No, none that I know of unless you were working under the protection of a contract. (Your firing, however, was probably for reasons other than for being out sick one day.)
