Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia
Hiring discrimination/retaiation
Do I have any recourse against the City and/or the Mayor. I am 66 yrs old. I had retired as Director of Public Works 2+ yrs ago. I had retired due to family matters. I applied & interviewed for the Deputy position. I was verbaly given the post by the Director & City Manager on a Thur. The next Mon the Cty Mgr told me the Mayor would not let him hire me & if he did the mayor would eliminate the position and micro manage the City. The starting sal was to be $89K. The Dir of Pb Wks was ecstatic that I was returning to the Department as her Dpty. As Dir I had professional disagreements with the Mayor when he was then the president of the school board. After retirement the Mayor had requested that I stay on as a consultant for the City, which I still am. The Director mentioned to me, after the postion was retracted, that she was surprised the mayor would carry a grudge this far. The City Manager has not told me what the reason was for withdrawing the offer. My intentions were to stay on until age 70 to increase my VA Public retirement rate.
