Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

I am an hourly worker in Virginia.

I have a few questions about the employment practices at my job:

My employer contacted me with 16 hours notice to come in and work for one hour, clock out and wait 4 hours for my scheduled shift. They then told me that I might not get my scheduled shift but to wait and see that day. If I do have to work I will have to stick in town for 4 hours until I can clock in again. I commute to work, so this is an inconvenience but is any part of it illegal?

Also...

Can my employer force me to clock out for a couple unscheduled 30-minute breaks throughout the day to cut their labor cost? Can they fire me for refusing these last minute schedule changes when they interfere with appointments and school?

No, and yes, unless you're working under the protection of a contract

prohibiting such practices by the employer (in my opinion).
