Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

Job Change

I have worked for the same company for 5 years and we hired an assistant now we are downsizing and I've basically been told that I have to take another position (in a field I have never worked in) I've worked in the accounting field for 22 years now they want me to go to another position or else I get let go as well. Is this legal shouldn't the assistant that has only been here 6 months be let go before me? What are my alternatives?

Unless you are working under the protection of a contract which would prohibit such an action by the company, the answer must be that it is quite legal.
