Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

I have been at my job for over four years with no problems complaints or issues whatsoever.A new dress code has just came out after ive been there for so long.I am being told things that are actually not in writing in the new dress code or handbook...is this legal since what they are telling me is not in writing?
