Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

Not Joining the Company after signing the Offer letter

Hi Guru,

I've a situation which goes like this.

I signed an offer letter for a new guy/company and my current company matched that offer. So i decided to stay with my current company. Since the offer letter is ''Employment-at-will'' and not a employment contract, the new guy could not do anything legally.

But he sent an email saying he wants to teach me a lesson by calling my current company bosses and letting them know about me.If my bosses dont care about the new guy, he will call my collegues and let them know about me and my salary.

I talked to my bosses and they dont care about the new guy. But i want to know how to reply the new guy and also if i can sue him for harassment ?

You could inform the "new guy" that his calling or attempting to contact your current employer for purposes of harassment or whatever might well constitute the tort(civil wrong)of interference with business relations which is recognized as a valid cause of action in the Commonwealth and which could land him in court as a defendant if you decided to pursue it.
