Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

Labor law question

I work for an oil change business which has around 30 stores. The company is based in North Carolina, but the store I work in is located in Virginia. For full time employees they only allow 3 holidays off a year Thanksgiving, Christmas, and new years, each of which are not paid. They also require 10 hour work days with no lunch break within those 10 hours. Is this legal?

Re: Labor law question

Private employers in so-called employment at will jurisdictions like Virginia and North Carolina are under no legal obligation to offer any holidays off to their employees---whether paid or not---unless there is an employment contract or collective bargaining type of agreement which requires it.

They also can require that employees work 10 hour days(unless prohibited by contract) as long as all hours over 40 in any given work week are compensated at time and one half.

As for lunch breaks, employers can legally relegate those welcome respites that most folks take for granted to the realm of memory.
