Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

Layoff

Is it legal for a Company to lay you off, but before they do hire two people with lower salarys to replace you. Also, I had left a position that was guaranteed a life time of employment and moved from Wi. to Virginia. Only to be layed off three and a half years later, Because the vice president made a mistake by hiring me with a nice salary, once he realized he could get two people for my salary with no experience he hired them and let me go. Is this legal?

Re: Layoff

Yes, I'm afraid the scenario you describe is quite legal in Virgina, which is a so-called

employment at will jurisdiction, a legal term meaning Virginia employers are virtually free to

hire and fire at will.

Unless you were working under a specific contract

guaranteeing you certain rights and protections and there was a provable breach of this contract,

you have no realistic legal recourse in Virginia that I'm aware of for the scenario which you have described.
