Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

I lost my job due to my losing an election this past fall (treasurer of Lunenburg county in Virginia). I am still out of work and was told that I couldn't collect unemployment benefits. Does this sound correct?

Check with the VEC (Virginia Employment Commission). Elected paid positions

may not be eligible for unemployment compensation in the Commonwealth.
