Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

manditory language classes

What are my rights regarding the city of winchester requiring me to take spanish classes and pass a test of knowlege. The classes are manitory according to the city and must be passed or future pay and promotion will be affected. I have worked for the city for 6 years. I don't think they have a right to make me thake this class!

Re: manditory language classes

I'm afraid you're quite wrong regarding the right of the City of Winchester to require competence in the Spanish language from its employees, unless, of course, you're covered by a contract or collective bargaining type of agreement which affords you a specific waiver or exemption from this kind of requirement.

Winchester, I believe, is one of the increasingly numerous jurisdictions within the Commonwealth which has experienced quite a substantial increase in its Hispanic component

of city residents in the last few years and, consequently, has the reasonable expectation that its city employees should have some ability to communicate with them(when necessary)in their language.
