Say a person has been working for a company for 5 years and direct deposit just became available, can the company force the employee to get a bank account and direct deposit?

If you mean by "force" the option of keeping your job or not as determined by whether or not you agree to direct deposit for your paycheck, and you are working without the protection of a contract of employment, then (assuming that you wish to stay employed with this company), the answer must
be, yes, it can.
