Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

I received a request from a potential employer who is looking to place me on contract with a financial corporation. The request involves releasing my SSN to the company and their financial services investigation firm for a background and financial check. I can understand doing this. What causes me to question the request is the letter also states that by signing the document I agree to release the contracting firm, the corporation and their financial services investigation firm from any liability resulting in the release of my SSN.
That sounds to me like, they're going to take my SSN and if by some chance someone steals it and uses it for identity theft, they're not liable. I'm thinking, if they're not liable for not securing my personal information who is.
After doing a search online I found in Massachusetts if they don't reasonably protect the information they're in violation of state law, which should make the contract moot. But I'm in Virginia and not sure if similar law protects me. I'm already suffering financially in this "great recession", having a major corporation do something stupid that causes my identity to be stolen and additional hardships placed on me and my family is more than I'm willing to agree to.
