Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

I have recently been charged with embezzlement of $900. I had signed a promisory note to pay my employer back, but I still went to the courthouse to receive my charge papers and court date. Is there any way, that since this is my first criminal offence and I have agreed to pay them back that I can avoid jail time and possibly reduce the carge? I've talked to two different lawyers. Once told me that it wouldn't be a big deal and it would get reduced as long as I paid it back and I wouldn't face jail and that I wouldn't need a private lawyer. Ther other told me that it should be ok, but I would need to hire a private lawyer.

Better go with the last one's advice (in my opinion).
