Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

How is this possible?

I was recently let go from my employer because we had a difference of an opinion. So she asked me--name removed--turn in my keys. When I contacted HR--name removed--recieve my discharge papers it read I was let go because of insubordination, breaking a company policy and disrespect. How can that be when I was never written up and I was just given a raise for job performance? I was asked turn in my key bc she said my opninion would not change. Can this company change the reason as why I was let go?

Re: How is this possible?

Yes, the company can likely offer any number of reasons for your departure but if any one of them

which is provided to one of your prospective employers who may call them for verification amounts to defamation, then you may have grounds for a lawsuit.

You should keep careful track to the extent possible of any employment turndowns which may have resulted from false and defamatory information which may have been provided by this former employer.
