Reprimand for personal email from home

I was friends with a person that was promoted to supervision. Their personality changed and they did me wrong so I sent a personal email from my private home email account to their private home email account. They brought a copy to their superintendant and I was reprimanded. This will effect my upcoming evaluation and in turn my payraise. Is this legal?
