Severance pay?

I recently left a company for a new job. I thought I had received my final paycheck, but today I received an amount that was classified as severance. What is this? It was my decision to leave, and I received pay for my accrued vacation separately already. I'm not sure why I got this additional amount and it's referred to as severance.

"What is this", you ask? How would anyone in this forum know? Why not call HR or whomever does payroll for your former employer and ask them/her to explain it?
