how do I sue former employer for defamation and slander

A past employer is slandering my name in background checks when i apply for employment. I found that this former employer is telling propective employers that i have committed some type of criminal acts and that they should not hire this person. My question is how do I sue this former employer for defamation and slander?

Better first see a lawyer knowledgeable in the law of defamation in the jurisdiction where the alleged acts occurred. Defamation cases can be surprisingly complex and difficult to prove, and you would be well advised not to attempt this on your own without the appropriate legal guidance.
