Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia
Tuition Re-imbursement
I was employed at this company for a year and planned on staying with them longer this is way I used the tuition benefit that they offered. Well in September of this year the company that I worked for lost the contract that I was on. My manager told me not to worry and that he would find me a job, but he was having no luck. Then he told me if I could find something to take it. I have the emails stating this. At the end of Sept four days before the contract ended I felt that I had no choice but to find a new job. The same day I emailed saying I found something else, the CFO called me and said that they were sending me a layoff letter. Two hours later they send me voluntary termination paper work, and tell me that I owe them all of the tuition back to them. They did not pay me my final pay check they put it towards my tuition repayment. Is there anything I can do because I had no choice but to find a new job they had nothing for me and were going to lay all of us off? Please if there is anything I can do help. Thank you

Re: Tuition Re-imbursement
What you have failed to clarify in your question are the precise conditions/terms under which you utilized this particular benefit. These conditions or terms are likely spelled out somewhere in some paper which you signed in making application for or in acknowledging receipt of this particular benefit.
Until this aspect of your situation is clarified, no reliable asnwer can be provided to your question.
In the unlikely event that there were no such conditions/terms which applied to this particular benefit and your use of it as an employee of the company, then, of course, you would be under no obligation to reimburse them for whatever was spent in your behalf for this tuition benefit.
