Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia
Wages and Timekeeping
We use an electronic timeclock for
employee punches. They are
instructed to punch in and out
according to their published work
schedule. Sometimes, an employee
punches in 5-10 minutes early each
day which results in an hour extra
per week. Am I obligated to pay that
few minutes each day which I have
not scheduled for nor asked the
employee to work?

Re: Wages and Timekeeping
No, I would think not. (The employee is only due compensation for the agreed upon schedule which has actually been worked and, not necessarily, the schedule which the time clock indicates that he or she may have worked.)
