Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

I work at a company where job-altering rumors were started about me. I contacted my manager and supervisor to inform them on what was going on. They stated that they would handle it. They failed to do so. Two months later, present time, this rumors are not only still being spread, they are deepening in details. I know that this is deformation and neglect on my supervisors part. Should I continue legally?
