Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

I work In a customer facing position. While customers were present a coworker shouted at me that he hates me, wishes I was dead , and used profanity. My employer has told me that that the employee will not be fired for his actions because he has been with the company for nine years and has no write ups in his file. Is there anything I can do. I don't feel I should have to work with this employee.
