Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

I have worked for my employer for thirteen years. I am being considered for a promotion. Can they check my education background after thirteen years of emplyment. I would think that they would consider my thirteen years of work history with them. Just wanting to know if they can check my education in the middle of my employment.
