Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

I worked as a personal assistant for 2 months for a business man in Miami, FL. I am now in Fairfax, VA. I want to file a small claims suit against him for not recieving more than 200$ for the entire period of time, I worked for him. I have emails promising payments which lagged for months. I have yet to recieve anything from him after repeatdly trying. I want to know if I have to get a lawyer? If so what type? and I am a student who is simply trying to get back what is owed wihich is $1,000 with out all my expenses. (time, gas, etc)

You will need to file your small claims court action against this individual

either in the jurisdiction where he now lives and/or works, and if that means, Miami, Florida, then that's where you'll have to go to have him properly served with the papers, and to obtain a valid judgment against him for your damages, and then to enforce the judgment(if necessary).
