Can a general contractor purchase workmans compensation insurance for a subcontractor (a company, not an individual)he employs on a job? If so, why would the sub not be required to have workmans compensation to cover its own employees?

Re: Workmans compensation

The subcontractor is required to purchase the

required workman's compensation for his employees. The general contractor would not be purchasing such insurance since the subcontractor employees do not work for him.

The cost of the workman's compensation for his employees is one of the subcontractor's costs of doing business and his resposibility for securing and maintaining this oarticular insurance cannot be contracted away to the general contractor.
