Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

Wrongful termination

I was fired for stealing food. A cook at at daycare, I would combine leftovers, divide them up and send them with employees. I was never told this was wrong (the food would've gon in the trash). The other employees got ''written up'' and I was fired and told my check would be deducted $250 for the food taken (three days of leftover trash). What can I do and what legally can they do, can they take this money???

Re: Wrongful termination

Yes, the answers to your questions are not much (VA is an employment at will jurisdiction)and yes, they can do what they've told you regarding the withholding of the $250.

However, if you believe that this action is unjustified, you could sue your former employer in small claims court for the return of your $250. (Filing cost around $38.)
