Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

Wrongful Termination?

During my 1-year tenure at ABC Corp., I noticed our Office Manager (OM) lying to employees as well as myself, witnessed her extemely controlling behavior, and was asked to under-report expenses for various activites so our boss wouldn't know how much she actually spent. I was uncomfortable with the situation and as it became more apparent to her that I was not going to just lie back & take it, she began loading unreasonable amounts of (her own) work on me and putting me in situations where I was forced to miss my boss's deadlines because she demanded I meet her deadlines first, then denied she had even given me the work when the boss questioned my ''failures.'' The last straw was when the OM got caught by our boss hiding a debt from him that resulted in his being contacted by attorneys on behalf of the federal government. The boss told me to garnish her wages, and even though I gave her ample time to take care of it herself (which she said she would), she didn't. The day she rec'd her short paycheck, she fired me. She told me it was due to financial contraints, but hired someone within a month of my departure. She's also told mutual friends that I was in counseling for poor behavior, a total lie. Do I have legal recourse?

Re: Wrongful Termination?

Assuming that the office manager terminated you with the full approval of the boss, I see no recourse for you under the circumstances which you've described, given the fact that the Commonwealth of Virginia is a so-called employment-at-will jurisdiction.
