Automatic one year lease renewal without signature

Can a landlord automatically renew a lease after the first year without getting a signature from the tenant and hold them to that next year agreement? I was under the impression that after the first year the agreement was monthly unless another lease was signed for the full year.

Yes, your impression is correct and there is normally provision for this type of renewal arrangement in the first lease that one signs.

That is to say, UNLESS your lease says otherwise, the landlord CANNOT do this. But you have to read the actual lease, because that can change the answer. The question is what did you agree to?
