Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

We need to brake our lease because of a family emergency. Our family is losing there house and lost their employment. The lease says you need a 60 day notice and even though we are vacating the apartment that we would have to pay $2400 for those 2 months and a fee. Since we aren't living there and they can retention it, I don't think we should have to pay that. Also, there's no way we can pay for two places at once. What can we do?

You could attempt to negotiate some kind of settlement with the landlord, but if that

doesn't "pan out", so to speak, you can expect, unfortunately, the landlord to pursue legal action against you in the local general district court to enforce the remaining part of the lease (my opinion).
