Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

Can I break the lease due to mold/health issues

I have rented a house for a year and just signed a new one year lease. About six months ago my two year old developed a cough/respiratory problems. Last Friday the doctor questioned if we had pets, new carpet, or mold. We said no. My husband went into the attic and the basement and found the basement ceiling covered in green mold. Our belongings are also moldy. We would like to move out of the house, but have 11 months left on our lease. Is mold a reason to break a lease?

Re: Can I break the lease due to mold/health issues

Under the circumstances which you've described, I would think not.(You can certainly request, nontheless, that the landlord take immediate action to ameliorate the situation.)
