Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

Breaking Lease

After signing a one year lease with my son-in-law,two months later he hit my daughter, tried to commit suicide. We tried to get him evicted but the landlord wouldn't do it. He went in a mental facility for four days and then threatend her again. We spent the night elsewhere when we went back to the house he had taken everything and went back to West Virginia. All the bills were in his name and I didn't have the money to turn them back on by this time. My daughter and I moved out now they say I am liable for the rent until it is rented. What can I do?

Re: Breaking Lease

Not much, other than hope that the unit can be rented before too much more time elapses without a tenant to take up the lease which you prematurely terminated by your sudden departure. (And, yes, the landlord is correct as to your liability under this lease which you apparently freely and voluntarily signed.)
