Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

Can we be charged for painting

My family just moved out of a condo that we rented for 2 years- My husband painted all walls where we had ''wear and tear'' however the baseboards needed paint and the walls needed to have some ''cutting'' with the paint- we now have gotten a bill for $575.00 for painting! I was told that we could not be charged for painting- is this true?

Re: Can we be charged for painting

Unless it was specifically allowed for under the terms of your lease or otherwise permitted by the landlord, it's possible that the unauthorized painting can be classified as "damages" deductible from your security deposit.
