Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

I am a co-lessee on a 1 year lease that began in June, 2009. My roommate is unwilling/unable to pay her half of the rent. I paid 1/2 by money order last month, and the entire rent this month by check, hoping the co-lessee would sign a paper indicating that she is letting me off of the lease. The landlord requires this in order for me to break the lease. The roommate will not sign.

What do I do?

Thanks!!

No surprise there; why would she allow you off the lease when she can't even pay her half now? Once you're off, then she's responsible for the whole ENCHILADA.

No, Senor, nunca!

Unless you don't care about damage to your credit, etc, you should consult an attorney to send tenant and landlord letter about the situation. If that does not work, you may have to file suit to get relief here. Good luck.
