Contract or No Contract

I recently signed a 12 month lease and after one month or so I moved from that residence to another residence of the same landlord. A new lease or an addendum for prior lease was ever signed. I now want to move due to a purchase of a home, Am I contracted/obligated to stay? I have offered to rent the apartment before vacating the premises so there will be no loss of income for the landlord. The landlord has rented the residence that I originally signed the lease on. Can I vacate without penalty?

Not unless the landlord gives you permission to do so before the term of the original lease is up (in my opinion).
