Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia
I was co-renting with my mother & she decided she wanted me out so I obliged. When I went to retrieve my belongings, she had some boxes packed up and told me this was all & wouldn't allow me in the house. After going through the boxes, I find that she has kept the most important of my items, dishes, medicines, my children's clothes, etc. She refused to give me receipts when I paid her my portion and she actually stole a couple of my paychecks. What can I do to get my property back legally as she is demanding more money for rent and utilities that I don't owe?

You could go to the clerk's office (civil division) of your local general district
court and request to file what's called a warrant in detinue for the return
of your personal property, and, in the alternative, for any that cannot be returned
to you for whatever reason, request the court to issue in your favor a judgment
for the fair market value of these items (for which you will likely need to
be able to present proof of their value to the judge hearing the matter).
